Me 262 Volume Three 3
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 8.65 $This reprint of Me 262 Volume Three continues J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek's detailed analysis of the world's first operational jet fighter and fighter-bomber. This book covers the night war waged by the Me 262 against the threat of the British Mosquito over Berlin in 1945: "I had caught a Mosquito illuminated in the searchlights at about 8,500 meters. However, because I had not managed to maneuver my Me 262 into the proper position, the rapid closing speed forced me to break off before I could finish my attack. With a top speed of 850 km/h, I was much faster than the Mosquito in front of me. I contacted the fighter controller by radio, asking him to keep the Mosquito illuminated. Then, I tried making a full turn to keep the enemy aircraft at the correct distance for a second attack." Also included is a day-by-day account of the Me 262's role in the daylight defense of the Third Reich. The authors have drawn extensively from the personal accounts of both German and Allied pilots as well as thousands of archive documents: "These guys came up so fast that we never knew what hit us. My aircraft was badly hit in the engine and port wing by cannon shells, and I was about to bail out when it seemed that the aircraft was still flyable. Lt. Florine's P-38 was not hit and he spent the next few minutes keeping the two jets off my back by diving into them each time they tried to close and finish me. Like my aircraft, his was unarmed. There is little doubt that he risked his own life to save mine." Following more than 30 years of research, Me 262 Volume Three forms part of the most comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe's revolutionary jet fighter ever published.

Me 262 Bomber and Reconnaissance Units (Combat Aircraft, 83)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.35 $When the revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262 jet first appeared as a bomber in the skies over north-west Europe in late 1944, it represented both a new dawn in aeronautical development and a great shock to the Allied air forces and armies. The Me 262's path to deployment as a bomber aircraft was tortuous and is surrounded in controversy. In mid-1944, Adolf Hitler, having seen the impressive and formidable performance of Me 262 prototypes, stated his firm desire to see the aircraft enter service, not as an interceptor, but as a bomber. In this aircraft he believed he had the weapon which would be able to attack the Allied armies with impunity if, as predicted, they landed on the coast of France. There was nothing which the Allies had in their air forces which could touch the Me 262. Although, due mainly to problems associated with delays in engine deliveries, its debut was too late to contest the Allied landings in Normandy, when it finally did enter initial service with Kommando Schenck, under the command of Knight's Cross holder Oberstleutnant Wolfgang Schenck, in the autumn of 1944, the bomb-carrying Me 262s conducted several hit-and-run raids against RAF airfields in Belgium and Holland. From then until the end of the war the Me 262 remained one of the most feared weapons in the Axis arsenal, and it was only the overwhelming Allied air superiority and the continuous dwindling of Axis supplies that finally grounded the planes. This book covers the complete history of the Me 262 bomber and reconnaissance units during World War II.

The Me 262 Stormbird: From the Pilots Who Flew, Fought, and Survived It
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.27 $The Me 262 was the first of its kind, the first jet-powered aircraft. Although conceived before the war, with the initial plans being drawn in April 1939, the Stormbird was beset with technological (particularly the revolutionary engines) and political difficulties, resulting in it not entering combat until August 1944, with claims of nineteen downed Allied aircraft. The performance of the Me 262 so far exceeded that of Allied aircraft that on 1 Sepember 1944, USAAF General Carl Spaatz remarked that if greater numbers of German jets appeared, they could inflict losses heavy enough to force cancellation of the Allied daylight bombing offensive. The story of how the Stormbird came to be is fascinating history, and it comes to life in the hands of noted historian Colin Heaton. Told largely in the words of the German aces who flew it, The Me 262 Stormbird provides the complete history of this remarkable airplane from the drawing boards to combat in the skies over the Third Reich. Features two forewords, one by Jorg Czypionka, Me 262 night fighter pilot, and another by historian and author Barrett Tillman.

Me 262, Volume Two
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 84.87 $In this, the second volume of their unprecedented study of the Messerschmitt Me262, internationally renowned authors J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek have drawn on more than 30 years of unrivaled research to continue the story of the world's first operational military jet aircraft. Using the frank and concise personal reports of Messerschmitt's front-line inspectors, as well as combat reports and other eye-witness accounts, the authors reveal the later tactical successes and failures of the aircraft as it was initially deployed in both the fighter role with Kommando Nowotny and in the bomber role with Kommando Schenk and KG51 over the western front in the autumn of 1944. Also included is an in-depth look at the array of ingenious and formidable weapons systems designed for the aircraft as well as detailed descriptions of the projected rocket-powered interceptor, BMW-engine, and heavily armed and armored variants. With 370 photographs - many never before published - together with more than 30 high-precision technical scale drawings plus 30 full-color interpretations and biographies of many of the military personalities associated with the early operations of the aircraft, this study is unquestionably the most comprehensive account of the Me262 ever written. It will be an essential requirement for those interested in early jet craft development and military aviation history.

Messerschmitt Me 262: The Production Log 1941-1945 [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.00 $This is an essential work of reference on the history of the world's first operational jet fighter, the Me 262. First flown as a pure jet on 18th July 1942, on 25th July 1944 an Me 262 became the first jet aircraft used in combat when it attacked a British photo-reconnaissance Mosquito flying over Munich. Some 1,500 Me 262s were built but less than 20% of these actually flew in combat. Most remained on the ground awaiting bomber conversion, or were unable to fly because of lack of fuel, spare parts or trained pilots. This is the first time that a detailed summary of every known and identified Me 262 has been compiled. Some 1200 of the 1500 aircraft constructed have been identified. The book lists sequentially each aircraft by Werknummer (Works Number) from prototypes and test aircraft through to all variants of operational machines, together with known pilots, assigned units and recorded flights. Where known the fate of each individual aircraft is given and where possible, a photo of each aircraft will accompany its entry in the Werknummer log.
